Arrest, kidnapping & Death under Torture in May 2021

The Syrian Human Rights Committee (SHRC) documented in May 2021 report that the Syrian regime forces arrested 43 civilians, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) arrested 25 civilians, and Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham arrested one person.

SHRC also documented during month that two families of detainees in the regime’s prisons were informed of their loved ones’ death in the regime’s prisons, in addition to another two detainees in the prisons of the Syrian Democratic Forces.

This month, SHRC documented the release of 11 detainees from the regime’s prisons, and one detainee from the prisons of the Syrian Democratic Forces.

First: the arrests

  • Syrian Regime:

On 1/5/2021, the regime forces arrested 30 civilians, including two children, in the city of Tartous, all of them from the village of Kanaker, southwest of Damascus countryside, while they were trying to migrate to Cyprus from the Syrian coast, and took them to an unidentified destination.

On 1/5/2021, the Syrian regime forces arrested 5 women while they were trying to leave the town of Umm Batinah in the countryside of Quneitra governorate; After closing the road towards the villages of Juba and Khan Arnabah, they were taken to an unidentified destination.

On 7/5/2021, the Syrian regime forces arrested Mamoun Qassem Aweer, a resident of Dael city in the northern countryside of Daraa governorate, when he passed one of their checkpoints in the city of Damascus, and took him to an unidentified destination.

On 11/5/2021, the Syrian regime forces arrested Muhammad Mahmoud Khalil (30 years old), from the city of Muadamiyat al-Sham, west of Rif Dimashq  governorate, in front of the Municipal Council building in Muadamiyat al-Sham city centre, on the background of chanting anti-regime expressions, and took him to an unidentified destination. .

On May 27, 2021, members of the Air Security Forces carried out a raid and arrest campaign in the city of Dael in the northern countryside of Daraa governorate, and arrested 5 civilians, and took them to an unidentified destination.

On May 31, 2021, members of the regime forces arrested Bassel Asad Abu Zaid, a resident of Dael town in Daraa governorate countryside.

  • Syrian Democratic Forces

On 5/5/2021, the Syrian Democratic Forces arrested the child Abdul Rahman Mahal Al-Muhaisen (15 years), from the village of Al-Hajna in the northern countryside of Deir Ez-Zor, after raiding his house in the village of Al-Hajna, and took him to an unidentified destination.

On 11/5/2021, the Syrian Democratic Forces launched a raid and arrest campaign in the city of Al-Shuhail in the eastern countryside of Deir Ez-Zor Governorate, and arrested 7 civilians, including the child Muhammad Fawaz Al-Dosh (11 years), and took them to an unidentified destination.

On 20/5/2021, the Syrian Democratic Forces launched a raid and arrest campaign in the city of Al-Shuhail in the eastern countryside of Deir Ez-Zor Governorate, and arrested 16 civilians, and took them to an unidentified destination.

On 22/5/2021, the Syrian Democratic Forces arrested Abdul Ghaffar Abdul Aziz Muhammad, a member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s Logical Committee, from the city of Al-Jawadiyah in the northwestern countryside of Al-Hasakah governorate, as he passed one of their checkpoints in Shabak village of Al-Jawadiyah city and took him to an unidentified destination.

  • Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham

On 7/5/2021, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham arrested Muhammad Naasan al-Dabal, a cameraman for “Orient News Channel”, from the town of Darkush in the western countryside of Idlib governorate. He was arrested with his brother Omar, in front of Al-Rahma Hospital in the town of Darkoush, against the background of a verbal altercation between them and members of the Commission in front of the hospital, and they took them to an unidentified destination.

Second: Death under torture

  • The Syrian Regime

On 4/5/2021, the family of the detainee Bashar Khalil al-Halqi learnt of his death under torture. Bashar is a military defected from the regime forces, He came from Jassem city in the northern countryside of Daraa governorate. He was arrested by the regime forces in October 2018, after surrendering to them, and he was among those who normalised their security situation earlier.

On 10/5/2021, the family of the detainee Muhammad Abdel Moneim Ibrahim Al-Ways learnt of his death under torture. He is a former fighter in the ranks of the Bashayer Al-Nasr Brigade, one of the armed opposition factions, from the city of Al-Ashara in the eastern countryside of Deir Ez-Zor. He was arrested by the regime forces in 2015 being lured in the Qalamoun area in the governorate of Rif Dimashq, while he was trying to go to the areas under the control of the armed opposition factions in Idlib governorate.

  • Syrian Democratic Forces

On 12/5/2021, the family of the detainee, Ghiath Aboud Saud Al-Fadil, learnt of his death under torture. He is from the village of Tal Al-Shayer, Al-Shaddadi city, in the southern countryside of Al-Hasakah Governorate. He was arrested by members of the Syrian Democratic Forces in May 2019.

On 13/5/2021, the family of the detainee Issa Muhammad al-Khalil learnt of his death under torture. He is from the village of Nas Tal, city of Tal Abyad in the northern countryside of Raqqa governorate. The Syrian Democratic Forces had arrested him in 2018.

Third: Releases

  • The Syrian Regime

On 2/5/2021, the regime forces released the detainee Hussein Nour al-Din al-Halqi, who is from Daraa Governorate, after a 4-month detention.

On May 12, 2021, the regime forces released the detainee, Mustafa Kain Al-Othman, who is from the city of Galin in the countryside of Daraa governorate, after two and a half years of detention.

On May 12, 2021, the regime forces released the detainee Suleiman Hussein al-Ghabagbi, who is from the town of al-Karak al-Sharqi in the countryside of Daraa governorate, after a detention that lasted four months.

On May 13, 2021, the regime forces released the detainee Nasreen Mohieddin Wanli and her two sons, who are from Rukn Al-Dedeen neighborhood in Damascus, after 9 years of detention.

On May 15, 2021, the regime forces released the detainee Anas Fayez al-Omar, who is from the city of Talmans in the Idlib countryside, after a 5-year detention.

On 16/5/2021, the regime forces released the detainee Zuhair al-Hawas, who is from the city of Mohassan in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor Governorate, after a 9-year detention.

On May 17, 2021, the regime forces released the detainee, Murad Mamoun al-Jamous, from the city of Dael in the countryside of Daraa governorate, after 4 years of detention.

On May 18, 2021, the regime forces released the detainee Muhammad Ali Basis, who is from the village of Khirbet Al-Naqous in the Al-Ghab Plain in the Hama Governorate countryside, after a 7-year detention.

On 20/5/2021, the regime forces released the detainee, Waqas Orhan, a Turkish national, who had been arrested by the regime forces since 2011 in the city of Aleppo.

On 20/5/2021, the regime forces released two detained young men from the village of Umm Batinah in the eastern countryside of Quneitra. They were released as part of the deal reached on May 15, which ended with the displacement of a number of villagers, including the two released young men, to the opposition-controlled north of Syria.

  1. Syrian Democratic Forces

On May 31, 2021, the Syrian Democratic Forces released the detainee Yassin Al-Saleh, who is from the city of Raqqa, after a 5-year detention in Alaya prison in the Qamishli countryside.
