Site of burying Houla massacre Victims
On the morning of 25/05/2012, army units, supported with Shabiha groups from neighbouring villages, particularly the town of “Al-Qabu”, began targeting the town of Taldo in the Houla area, located in the northwest of Homs, with artillery shelling that lasted for about ten hours.
After the bombing stopped, the forces entered the town, killing 109 civilians with firearms and white weapons, and wounding approximately 300 others with various injuries. Most of the victims were children and women.
According to information obtained by the Syrian Human Rights Committee in the months following the massacre, the direct official responsible for carrying out the massacre is Captain Razi Safi Ali, a member of the Fourth Division, 555th Regiment based in Alsumaria – 86th Battalion.
In commenting on the heinous crime that caused international repercussions at the time, the regime claimed that the massacre was perpetrated by opposition forces, in order to draw international sympathy.
However, the International Special Investigation Committee on Syria refuted these allegations, and denied the possibility of the opposition involvement, even technically speaking, to reach the area where the crime was carried out, and in its report issued on August 16 2012, it studied the points where the massacre was committed, and the possibility available on the day of the crime for all parties to reach the scene of the crime.
The Houla massacre marked the beginning of a series of successive massacres committed by Bashar al-Assad’s regime in the months that followed it; such as the al-Qubeir massacre that took place approximately ten days later, then the Tremseh massacre nearly a month later, to name a few. Bashar al-Assad’s regime has committed massacres against civilians, given the policy of impunity that the international community has pursued on Syria since the onset of the 2011 events and up until now. This has allowed the perpetrators to continue their policy of genocide that Syria has been witnessing since 2011.
The Syrian Human Rights Committee serves to remind that the president of the Syrian regime, Bashar al-Assad, who is attempting to rehabilitate himself through illegal and unconstitutional elections, has committed many horrific massacres, crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide. Of these crimes, he has ordered the killing, displacement and arrest of over 50% of the Syrian people, and thus his natural place is to be brought to trial for his committed crimes.
Despite the farcical plays, practised by Bashar al-Assad and the pressure applied on civilians under his control to force them to participate in the fake elections; including the blackmail applied on the displaced by refraining from issuing the necessary identity documents, will not overcome the determination of the the free people of Syria to continue striving for a state in which freedom, dignity and justice are achieved for all.
