Sources of the family of Brigadier General Mahmoud Maatouq, director of Sednaya prison, reported the news of his death in mysterious circumstances.
Brigadier General Mahmoud Maatouq is responsible for the killing of hundreds of civilians and political opponents of Bashar al-Asad regime in Sednaya prison, the largest prison of the Syrian regime and the most deadly to his inmates.
The detainees in Sednaya prison suffer from severe torture. It acquired the traditions of the horrible desert prison of Tadmur, which Bashar al-Assad was obliged to close in 2001 following the international demands to close in order to divert the attention from the horrendous massacres that were perpetrated inside it in the 1980s and 1990s on the hands of his father and uncle, when tens of thousands of detainees were killed under torture, or due to ill-treatment, malnutrition and diseases.
Brig. Gen. Mahmoud Maatouq was heavily involved in the torture, the liquidation of the detainees and burning them in special furnaces, as documented by authentic human rights reports last year.
Currently, Sednaya prison is the home of about 15,000 detainees who oppose the Syrian regime. It is run by two sections of the military police and military intelligence services. It is 30 km away from Damascus.
The Syrian Human Rights Committee reminds the international community of what is recurring inside Sednaya prison as well as other prisons of the Syrian regime: detention, intolerable torture and the physical liquidation of the detainees. SHRC demands the international community to reject this inhumane situation, to work hard to stop it, to investigate the situation of prisons, and to bring to justice those involved in the torture and killing civilians under torture
