The Syrian Human Rights Committee documented 18 massacres committed throughout the month of March, 2016. The Syrian regime was responsible for six of them, and Russian warplanes were responsible for another six. Factions of the armed opposition committed three massacres, the Islamic State (Daesh) committed two massacres, and one last massacre was committed of whom the perpetrators are unknown. Aleppo came first in the documentation, where five of the massacres were committed, followed closely by al-Raqqa and Deir el-Zour where three massacres were committed in each province. Two massacres were committed in each of Rural Damascus and Daraa, and one massacre was documented in each of al-Quneitra, Homs, and Idlib.
The number of massacres committed in March were lower than the number of massacres committed in the past 18 months, this is partly a result of the cessation of hostilities agreement which came into effect on 27/2/2016.
