ISIS have published photos in which some of its members are seen to be destroying statues from the city of Palmyra (Tadmur), which were said to be with a smuggler who was trying to smuggle them from Syria via the northern borders. He was apparently stopped in the city of Manbaj in the eastern Aleppine countryside, which is under the control of ISIS.
ISIS have said that the smuggler and the statues were transferred to an ISIS court in Manbaj. The sentence ruled against the smuggler was that he should be lashed in front of civilians, whereas the statues were decreed to be destroyed.
Photos published by the organisation show both the lashing of the man claimed to be the smuggler and the destruction of the statues.
ISIS seized control of the city of Palmyra on 20/5/2015, after regime troops left the city in a sudden suspicious manner.
