Two Swedish journalists were kidnapped in Syria on Saturday 23/11/2013, the Swedish Foreign Ministry confirmed on Monday. The Ministry further revealed that independent photographer Niclas Hammerstrom and independent journalist Magnus Falkehed (who is based in Paris) were both abducted as they were leaving the country.
This news comes in during a month considered the worst for the freedoms of journalists and the press in Syria, due to the regime’s direct targeting of journalists on one hand, and the abduction of journalists carried out by a group operating in the opposition areas on the other hand, considered to be “The Organisation for the Islamic State in the Iraq and the Levant”.
The Syrian Human Rights Committee (SHRC) urges all international sides to put effort into establishing justice in Syria, and calls upon the civil and political sides in the opposition to put an effort into stopping the violations committed by ISIL, and to stop the abduction of journalists which ISIL is thought to be behind.
