Letter to Italian Parliament Members

Dear Sir / Madam
Re: Mohammad Sa’id Al-Sakhri and his family
The Syrian Human Rights Committee appeals to you to use your influence with the Italian government to disclose the fate and whereabouts of the Syrian asylum seeker Mr. Mohammad Sa’id Al-Sakhri who was forcibly deported from Malpinsa airport near Milano on 28th November 2002. Mr. Al-Sakhri was arrested upon arrival at Damascus Airport. Since then, he has vanished in the Syrian prisons. SHRC received unconfirmed reports leaked by Syrian security agents claiming that Mr. Al-Sakhri had died under torture; however we have no impartial channel to verify whether the story was right or wrong. SHRC also knows the games usually played by the Syrian Security Services to mislead relatives of the political detainees and human rights defenders.
The Syrian Human Rights Committee believes that it is the responsibility of the Italian Government to reveal the fate of the said Syrian citizen. It is her responsibility to use all possible influence to free him and return him to his family, especially that his current ordeal resulted directly from the Italian authorities’ decision to remove him forcibly and send him to Syria with no regard to the appalling human rights situation there, which is very well known to the world.
You are kindly requested to exert enough pressure on the Italian government to fulfill her responsibility towards this wronged person, disclose his fate and whereabouts and to use her influence to release him.
Mr. Al-Sakhri and his family were denied their basic rights to prove that their case is a genuine one during their five day detention in Italy. The immigration authorities dealt with them inhumanely, and even denied them the right to meet their relatives who came exclusively to see them. They were also stripped from their right for legal advice.
Your participation to alleviate the suffering of Mr. Al-Sakhri is a moral responsibility to fix the wrong made by the Italian government.
President of Syrian Human Rights Committee
