shrc On Wednesday 30/7/2008 the criminal court in Damascus held the first open session in the trial of the Damascus Declaration detainees, who were arrested following the convention of national council on 1/12/2007. The session was held under the ruling of the Baathiest judge Muhyi-Deen Al-Hallaq. The judge told later that the trial will continue on 26/8/2008. The detained leadership who were brought to the court yesterday included Dr. Fida al-Hourani, Riyadh Seif, Ahmed Toma, Akram al-Buni, Jabr al-Shoofi, Yassir al-Eity, Ali al-Abdullah, Walid al-Buni, Mohammed Haaji Darwish, Fayez Sarah, Talal Abu Daan and Marwan al-‘Ush. The court had charged the detainees with accusations pertaining to articles 285, 286, 306 and 307 from the Syrian Penal Code: spreading false news, demoralising the morale of the nation, weakening the national feelings, fuelling sectarian and racist conflict, undermine the prestige of the state and affiliating to a secret organisation that aims to change the political and economic structure of the State. The detainees have denied all the accusations they were charged with. The Syrian Human Rights Committee has condemned the trial as unfair and the charges as meaningless. It demands the immediate release of the detainees, along other political detainees and prisoners of conscience. Syrian Human Rights Committee 31/7/2008 |
