SHRC The exceptional State Security Court (SSSC) issued three unfair sentences in its session held on Sunday 29/7/2007. It sentenced Mr. (Majed Sulaiman Bakri) to a life sentence with hard labour which was then reduced to a 10 year term with hard labour, confinement and amercement. He was accused of revealing secrets that threaten the security of the state. Mr. (Sulaiman Shaher) was sentenced to 7 years imprisonment. He was accused of affiliation to a secret society that aims to change the economic and social structure of the state. Mr. (Walid Omar Ibrahim) was sentenced to 5 years, being accused of carrying out action not permitted by the authorities. On every Sunday that holds a new session of SSSC, the Syrian people are startled by the sentencing of a new group of detainees, whom they have never heard of before and who have been detained for years before being condemned with heavy and unfair sentences which destroy their futures as well as those of their families. This is solely due to their practice of their freedom to express their views or their opposition to the ruling regime. SSSC practises its work in secrecy and lack of transparency relying mainly on the reports of intelligence authorities which carry out random and despotic arrests depending on the reports of biased and corrupt secret agents. Therefore SHRC requests the abolition of the exceptional SSSC which has no legal validity, the repeal of its sentences, the release of all those misjudged by this illegal court, and the referral of all cases to specialised unbiased courts, which have nothing to do with the domination of the intelligence and security authorities. SHRC requests that all criteria of fair trial should be available. Syrian Human Rights Committee 31/7/2007 |
