On Sunday (24/12/2006) five detainees were unfairly sentenced by the Supreme State Security Court (SSSC) due to their Islamic tendencies.
The Palestinian-Lebanese citizen Mohammed Mustafa Ismail was sentenced to eight years in prison, Syrian citizen Hussein Ibrahim was sentenced to 6 years prison, Mazen al-Khateeb was sentenced to three years, and Muawiya al-Rahaal and Abdul-Kareem Khalid were sentenced to a year and a half in prison.
The Syrian Human Rights Committee (SHRC) considers these unfair sentences as invalid, serving the regime's oppressive function of stripping citizens of their rights. SHRC requests the charges against the abovementioned detainees to be dropped and for them to be released immediately, and requests that their trial be repeated at a normal civil courts which meet the standards of fair and just trials
