On Sunday 17/9/2006, the human rights activist Muhammad Haji Darweesh was arrested in a military intelligence branch in Damascus, after being summoned there for interrogation.

The Syrian Human Rights Committee (SHRC) requests for his immediate release and condemns the increasingly arbitrary and oppressive arrests that have been taking place. SHRC calls upon the Syrian authorities to stop attacking the freedoms of citizens and to respect their rights which are guaranteed by the Syrian constitution and international conventions.
