Double and Additional Punishment for Detainee Ali al-Abdullah

An informed source has reported that detainee Ali al-Abdullah has been subjected to additional and double punishments in Adra prison two days ago. The officer overlooking the wing in which Ali al-Abdullah was held has transferred him to a solitary cell, after numerous incidents of provocation incited by the officer led to an argument between both men.
The Syrian Human Rights Committee (SHRC) calls upon the Syrian Authorities to stop these oppressive measures against Ali al-Abdullah and release him immediately, as well as his colleagues, all detained due to their participation in the National Council of the Damascus Declaration which took place last December. SHRC also calls for an end to arbitrary oppressive arrests and detaining citizens for expressing their views and participating in the current issues of their country.
Background:
Mr Ali al-Abdullah (58 years) was arrested on 17/12/2007, when an intelligence patrol arrested him from his home due to his participation in the National Council for the Damascus Declaration for democratic change and is also a member of the Committee for the revival of civil society. He has been detained prior to this three times: the first in 1994 upon his return from abroad for seven months. The second time was in May 2005 due to his activism in the al-Attasi Forum for National Dialogue, although he was released on 2/11/2005 due to a presidential amnesty. His third period of detention lasted for seven months with his son in March 2006 due to his participation in a rally that took place outside the SSSC calling for an end to the emergency laws. Mr Ali al-Abdullah is from Deir Al-Zour. He lives with his family in Qatna, Rural Damascus, is a graduate in philosophy, and works as a journalist, writing for numerous Arabic newspapers.
