Two Islamists Sentenced to Prison
SHRC

The Supreme State Security Court (SSSC) in the Syrian capital, Damascus issued two sentences against two Islamist Detainees on Sunday 22/7/2007, accusing them of being members of a secret organisation that aims to change the economic and social structure of the state. The citizen Mahmoud Tayba was sentenced to seven years in prison whilst the citizen Khidr Alloosh was sentenced to five years imprisonment.
The Syrian Human Rights Committee (SHRC) considers these sentences as unlawful due to being issued by an exceptional and an unqualified Court, and views the continued practice of arbitrary detentions by the Syrian Authorities benefiting from the gross international violations of human rights as a disaster on all at the end and will not benefit the Syrian regime in smothering liberties.
Therefore, SHRC calls for the immediate release of the above mentioned detainees and all political prisoners and prisoners of conscience, as well as an immediate end to the practice of unlawful arbitrary arrests. If it so happens that the above mentioned detainees certainly should be trialled then they should be referred to fair and specialised courts and be trialled whilst enjoying their rights to freedom and defence lawyers.
