SHRC SHRC was made aware that Kurdish Syrian citizen Noah Ahmad Osman was arrested by the Political Security Branch in the Hasaka Province in North-Eastern Syria on March 21st of last year after he took part in the annual local celebrations of Norouz, which is a Kurdish feast marking the beginning of spring and the calendar for several cultures in Mesopotamia. He was arrested for reading a Poem in Kurdish during the celebration.
In addition to that, sources affiliated with the Kurdish Democratic Alliance mentioned that Mr. Osman was transferred from the Hasaka Central Prison to the Adra Prison on the outskirts of Damascus, where he is still detained for almost sixteen months.
It is worthwhile mentioning that Mr. Osman is the sole provider and caretaker for his ailing parents, who did not publicise the arrest incident in hope of an early release for their son, which has not been the case so far.
SHRC, while denouncing this cruel arrest by the Syrian security apparatus, calls on President Bashar Assad and all concerned Syrian authorities to release Noah Ahmad Osman immediately and to stop the practice of detaining of citizens for practicing their rights in free speech, and following their own cultural customs and traditions of choice. SHRC calls for abolishing the emergency laws, which are referenced as the basis for such arrests.
SHRC calls on all international organizations concerned with human rights and legal welfare of prisoners to pitch in and help the efforts to release Noah Ahmad Osman as soon as possible and unharmed so that he could resume his role within his family and look after his awaiting parents.
