SHRC Human rights and media sources in Syria have reported that the health of the ex-detainee, the Sheikh and Engineer Abdul Sattar Qattan has deteriorated drastically due to his kidney failure, a result of the ill treatment and neglect he received during his last period of detention. It has now become mandatory upon him to have a kidney wash three times a week. Doctors have also told him that he must have a kidney transplant as soon as possible, which is only possible abroad. However, the Syrian Authorities have prevented him from travelling abroad after he was released from prison last year. The Syrian Human Rights Committee (SHRC) calls upon the Syrian Authorities to give the engineer Abdul Sattar Qattan permission to travel in order for him to have kidney transplant, and to stop the suffering he is experiencing and save his life. Abdul Sattar Qattan has been detained three times, each time being accused of his membership to the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria. He was detained from between 1975-77 and 1997-1996. he was also detained from between 2004-2007, accused of delivering financial aid to the families of detainees and those who have disappeared in prisons. Sheikh Abdul Sattar Qattan is 68 years old from Aleppo, north Syria. Syrian Human Rights Committee 15/4/2008 |
