The Supreme State Security Court in Damascus issued on Sunday 1/10/2006 a sentence of four years imprisonment against the Syrian citizen Anas al-Awf because of his Islamic tendency.

The Syrian Human Rights Committee requests the Syrian authorities to immediately release Mr. al-Awf and all other political detainees and prisoners of conscience in Syria. SHRC also requests them to stop criminalising and prosecuting Syrian citizens because of their religious tendencies, as the choice of religion and denomination of practice are both guaranteed by the Syrian constitution and the International Conventions.
