SHRC The Syrian Human Rights Committee received news from the coastal city of Tartous on Monday 14/5/2007, that the First Criminal Court sentenced the political activist and member of opposition, Adil Tawfeeq Mahfoudh (51 years) to six months in prison with a fine, charging him of “disturbing the fineness of the nation”. A patrol of the Syrian Security in Tartous had previously arrested Mr. Adil Mahfoudh from his home on 7/2/2006, dealing with him in an ill and humiliating manner in the presence of his wife and children. He was then released on 12/3/2006 on bail, so that his case would continue. SHRC views the sentence issued on the citizen Adil Mahfoudh as unjustifiable, emerging from a political strategy of terrorising political activists and opposers of the Syrian regime. SHRC also notes that the escalating policy of issuing harsh sentences against the opposition which is being practiced currently by the Syrian Authorities, aims to attain political gains before the upcoming formal referendum to take place at the end of the next month. SHRC calls upon the Syrian Authorities to be faithful to the principles of the Syrian Constitution and the international conventions it has signed, to respect human rights in Syria and put an end to arbitrary arrests and issuing obscure and generalised unlawful sentences, as well as exploiting general freedoms in order to attain political gains. On this occasion, SHRC calls upon the Syrian Authorities to release all prisoners of conscience in Syrian prisons. Syrian Human Rights Committee 14/5/2007 |
