Mohammed Haydar Zammar Sentenced Pursuant to Article 49/1980
SHRC

The Exceptional State Security Court (SSSC) in Damascus issued last Sunday 11/2/2007 a death sentence then reduced it to 12 years imprisonment term against the Syrian detainee Mohammed Haydar Zammar (45 years) who is also naturalised as a German citizen. The sentence was pursuant to Article 49/1980 which condemns to death membership to the Muslim Brotherhood Movement.
Mohammed Haydar Zammar who was accused with terrorist acts was abducted from Morocco in 2002 by the American and German agents and deported to Syria. He vanished in Palestine Branch for Military Interrogation for four years before he was moved to Sednaya prison and brought in front SSSC despite the facts that the accusations proved invalid
Mr. Zammar was subjected to severe torture in Palestine Branch by the Syrian Military Intelligence to extract confessions by force. None-Syrian Intelligence also interrogated him.
The Syrian Human Rights Committee had researched Mr. Zammar’s case from the outset of his deportation to Syria, got in touch with the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood who refuted beyond any shadow of doubt whether Mr. Zammar has ever had any relations with their movement. SHRC also checked with his acquaintances and neighbours in Germany who affirmed that he had no contacts with Muslim Brotherhood. On the contrary, they confirmed his negative stand towards them.
Mr. Mohammed Hayder Zammer comes from Aleppo in northern Syria, but he immigrated to Germany and was naturalised as a German citizen. He works in trade and business.
The Syrian Human Rights Committee confirm that the sentence issued against Mr. Zammar is an oppressive one, and even not applicable to his case in any way. However, the Syrian authorities resorted to this unjust sentence to free themselves from the embarrassment especially that the accusations of terrorism against him proved untrue.
SHRC regards the ongoing imprisonment of Mr. Zammar is very much like the imprisonment of many innocents in Guantanamo Bay. Therefore, SHRC requests the release of Mr. Zammar, to make an apology and compensation to him. SHRC requests also that the American and German authorities act quickly to get him released because they caused his arrest especially after the charges made against him proved untrue.
