Military General Attorney Call for Criminalisation of Maleh is Unlawful
SHRC

In the military penal court hearing which was held this morning (13/5/2010), the Military General Attorney called for the criminalisation of the prominent Syrian lawyer Haitham al-Maleh (80 years), with the accusation of “spreading false news that weaken the spirit of the nation”. The session was adjourned to the 3/6/2010 to present a defence.
The Syrian Human Rights Committee (SHRC) considers the prosecution’s claim as an unjustified intervention in freedom of speech expression as guaranteed by the Syrian constitution and the UN conventions which Syria has signed.
SHRC therefore requests an immediate halt to the arbitrary measures being made against the lawyer Haitham al-Maleh, which have been continuous since his arrest seven months ago (14/10/2009). SHRC also calls for an end to the ill treatment and harsh conditions endured by the lawyer in Damascus Central Prison in Harasta.
