SHRC

The Syrian Human Rights Committee (SHRC) has learnt from an informed source in the city of Homs that approximately a month ago on 21/6/2010, the corpse of the youth Mohammed Ali Rahmoon was handed to his family in the al-Khidr neighbourhood in Homs. The abovementioned youth was arrested a month and half previously due to an argument he had with the financial Department, which wanted to increase the tax on his workplace which is located in the industrial area. Mohammed Ai Rahmoon was infuriated, and swore at the government. Two hours later he was arrested; His lifeless corpse was handed over to his family. A source close to his family has reported that Mohammed Ali Rahmoon’s nails were removed, his teeth broken, and his family were clashed with the security and intelligence when they insisted that his death be recorded as that of a martyr. He also had a large and grand funeral.

SHRC unequivocally condemns the use of torture till death by the Syrian Security Intelligence, and calls for an end to the use of torture in Interrogation and detention centres. SHRC also calls for the safety of all those detained from repressive measures according to the Syrian constitution and International Human Rights Laws.
SHRC also calls for an independent investigation into this incident, and that all those implicated be tried at an independent court. To conclude, SHRC offers its condolences to the family of the bereaved and all the Syrian people.
