Media and Field Activist Abu Yazan al-Hamwi Killed
The field and media activist Abu Yazan al-Hamwi was killed in Wadi al-Daif in Idlib today. According to field activists, al-Hamwi was on a field tour with the Aljazeera Mubashar news channel team, in which he was recording the conditions of the area.
The tour began in rural Hama, and then the team proceeded to Idlib to inspect the humanitarian situation in Wadi al-Daif. It was there that al-Hamwi was killed due to a sniper’s shot from the al-Za’lanah checkpoint.
The killing of Abu Yazan al-Hamwi contradicts article 79 of first amendment to the Geneva Protocol which clearly states that journalists enjoy the same protection as civilians. Therefore, they should be protected and respected as long as they do not engage in any hostilities. The Syrian Human Rights Committee (SHRC) condemns this deliberate attack and considers it a war crime committed by the Syrian regime as part of its offensive on media teams and civilians in general. SHRC calls for an immediate end to these violations and that those responsible be held to account.
