SHRC Mr. Yousof was detained twice in his life, the first time in 1964 because of his criticism of the dictatorial policies of president Amin el-Hafiz’s government. He was a subject to severe physical and psychological torture. When he was released several months later, he suffered from a broken rib. The second and final arrest occurred on the morning of Monday 31 March 1980, which was a general strike day in Syria, in sympathy with Law Bar. He was accused as a member of Arab Writers Union of the antagonistic thought of the revolution and Ba’ath party, and incited others to strike…. He spent a few months in Sheikh Hasan prison in Damascus where he was moved twice to Mowasat Hospital because of severe torture, then he was moved to Tadmur prison, where all news about him came to an end. The Syrian Human Rights Committee appeals to all philanthropists to help release Abdul Wadud Yousof, or at least to disclose all information about his current situation. It is a call to keep human life and a useful distinguished mental capacity. |
